Active military checklist

Tuition Assistance (TA) is a Department of Defense program. The program is not administered or monitored by the VA. TA rules vary by branch of service and can even vary between different units within the same branch. The Education Service Officer at your military installation should be your starting point for questions regarding TA, as well as the obtaining the necessary application forms.

Step 1

Apply to ASU

Learn how and when to apply to ASU.

Apply to ASU

Note: Start early! We recommend starting this process as early as four to six weeks prior to the start of classes, but certainly no later than 15 days prior.

Keep in mind TA rules and deadlines vary by branch of service, but TA must be approved prior to the start of classes.

Student steps for using TA:

Step 2

Meet with your Education Service Officer (ESO)

Step 3

Get an Evaluated Degree Plan

An Evaluated Degree Plan is the official academic document for active duty, guard and reserve students that articulates all requirements for degree completion, identifies all courses required for graduation and includes an evaluation of all successfully completed prior coursework.

Undergraduate students: Review your DARS with an academic advisor and present this signed document for the approval of your TA. DARS is the official degree audit used by ASU to track undergraduate graduation requirements.

Graduate students: Work with your academic advisor to discuss degree requirements and obtain an approved copy of your Interactive Program of Study (iPOS). Watch this video to get an overview of the iPOS.

Step 4

Enroll in classes and get a class schedule from My ASU

Step 5

Complete the Benefits Responsibility Form

The Benefits Responsibility Form covers some information in this checklist, but also lets us confirm your status, branch of service, and potential TA use in conjunction with VA benefits.

Step 6

Get a tuition receipt

You’ll find this on the Finances tab in My ASU. If your ESO asks you for further information, please reach out to our Sponsor Billing team via email at sponsorbilling@asu.edu, by phone at 1-855-278-5080 or by fax at 480-965-9242.

Step 7

Obtain your approved and funded TA voucher

Get this through your virtual education center.

Step 8

Send your approved and funded TA voucher to Sponsor Billing

TA processing steps by ASU and DoD:

Step 9

ASU Sponsor Billing begins processing

Your TA will be reflected on your student account as a third-party sponsor credit in anticipation of receiving a payment from the DoD.

Step 10

DoD sends payment to ASU

This happens later in the term.

Step 11

ASU reviews and posts payments

Sponsor Billing will review the approval, apply a third-party sponsor credit for the TA amount being paid by the DoD, and assess a third-party billing fee.

Eligible ASU Online undergraduate students will automatically receive the Military Active Duty and Reservist Commitment Scholarship to cover the specific courses that TA was approved and funded for, within two weeks after the session start date with no additional steps. This scholarship is not available to students in a campus-based program and is not available to graduate students.

Third-party billing fees and any other fees are not covered by TA or by the scholarship; they are out-of-pocket costs for the student.

Step 12

ASU Sponsor Billing reports grades

This happens after the term ends.

Step 13

ASU Online reports graduations

This is applicable only for Army, Air Force or Space Force students.

Note: Be sure to check with your ESO on the fiscal year cap, as funding and total credit allotments may change. Military students will likely have an out-of-pocket cost at some point within the academic year.
